twenty one.

Music | John | June 16, 2008

lets start our monday right shall we.

if you are lookin for an album you don’t need to take too seriously, or one that can go along with you and take the blues away, look no further.

I still don’t get the direction mystery jets is heading toward.
Don’t get me wrong, this album is filled with pop songs that will last a lifetime.
there is in fact a certain swagger about the songs in this album that would probably make them instant classics.

this album is surprisingly a bloody good pop album.

why is it surprising? well, their previous album barely gave a hint of this direction, probably upsetting many.
the producer of this album ‘the erol alkan‘ is also not known for making memorable pop songs like these.

no hard bass lines or mad guitar riffs.

so is this album about their progress as a band, toying with different sounds?
or is it a stamp, a statement that they have arrived somewhere?

i say screw it. just enjoy them as they are for the moment.
even if this were any other bands only album, it is already a masterpiece in its own right.

it was released a few months back, but from ‘young love‘ to ‘two doors down‘, this album is downright fun, addictive, and will hook you silly anytime.

narrow stairs.

Music | John | June 13, 2008

i refrained i refrained and i refrained.

but i have decided to cave in and talk about them.

when death cab came out with plans i thought they were heading for a soft direction.

it was light, breezy and easy, though that never got the critics waxing lyrical.

soul meets body was the quintessential pop song which in my opinion could speak to the masses and feature on every single radio station.

then everybody ‘went PBJ’ on them too.
not complaining, i always thought they deserved much much more airplay.
but something was different, their edge seemed to be wearing off.

their frontman Ben Gibbard had a voice for emotion.

and with narrow stairs, the band truly exploited it. this time with menacing effect.

heavier and darker than they have ever been before, i’m really getting them this time round.

get this album. they deserve your love. you get a free silkscreen poster with it.

spiritualized set my soul on fire.

Music | John | June 5, 2008

I still remember the first time the track ‘ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space‘ found its way to my ear canals…

It was an epiphany at a level somewhat similar to the lost of innocence in the throes of adolescence.

Songs in A&E is back to being the awesome Spiritualized i fondly remember.

An immaculate balance of shoegaze mixed with minimalist rock and orchestral genius finally has its day.

It has been a while but this album might just trump those that have come before it.

Powerful yet subtle anthems are littered all over this album and its slowly setting my soul on fire.

whoosh.

hercules & love affair

Music | John | May 14, 2008

Forget the persistent attempts to classify Hercules & Love Affair.

From light disco to early-house from the 70s and 80s, the references keep flying in but this is definitely no banging record for you to shake away the blur.

The vintage vibe still creeps in from time to time with most of the tracks but make no mistake,
this album is too complex, too fresh and produced with too much finesse to be referred to as a shot at revival.

Most tracks border on an easy dance-able bpm and with Antony of Antony & The Johnsons gracing the album, it is a sure win.

It would be convenient to label this band with the rigid genres of today but it would be an undeserving description.

I doubt the hype for this album will be massive, (at least not in singapore) but whoever equates just hype to indisputable quality is a fool.

get this album way before its release date in june.

friday this boy’s in love.

Music | John | May 9, 2008

Aussies know how to go all the way down under and produce them dark, dirty sounds like no one can.

With Cut Copy releasing In Ghost Colours, I thought few could match them this year.

Then came along The Presets with Apocalypso. This might just take the cake.

I cant decide which album’s better. They are both 5 lightning bolts to your ass.

Grab this mad mad single from them and i think your chills will be crawling all over your stiff body.

friday i’m in love with the disco sirens.

Music | John | April 25, 2008

-photo from amachron.com

disco sirens is a single off midfield general’s latest album which has been out for a while now.

midfield general is damien harris, producer and owner of skint records.

It took him 8 years to release his sophomore album and this track is co-produced by xavier de rosnay (Justice)

So catch the bassline which is downright dirty and hard and bangin’.

The Justice influence is over the top.

This track really made me go kinda nuts at first.

enjoy the rest of the remixes with it.

saturday shoegaze with m83.

Music | John | April 19, 2008

shoegaze needs your time.

shoegaze always needs time.

shoegaze makes you think. experiment, feel, touch and imagine.

Of the present, the future, and definitely in retrospect.

shoegaze is not music you listen to when you are fiery, agitated or impatient.

Its music to be appreciated when you feel like embracing and nestling in the world and life you dont quite get at times.

And in more recent times, the shoegaze m83 have been producing is magic.

Yes. Magic… Amazing. Spectacular.

Graveyard girl video

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY8iy8S0S4w]

Saturdays = Youth is the latest offering by m83 which was released by mute records this week.

This album is definitely the easiest to appreciate as it is less experimental, more poppy and has more of a shoegaze feel. But dont deny them of their past work as many have overlooked. This new album just happens to be in a direction that will allow more people to get them.

Remember, take your time with m83 and you will adore them to bits.
