NIGHTWAVES ‘SWEET CARRIE’ REMIXES

Music | jon.ramsay | April 15, 2010

Like Johnny-5 and Steve Guttenberg cruising down sunset boulevard in the A-Team van listening to Huey Lewis and the News… it’s easy to break out all the “vintage 80’s” clichés when listing to Binary’s finest Nightwaves, but that’s only because their latest offering is so thoroughly convincing.

MAPS & ATLASES

Music | jon.ramsay | April 7, 2010

Is a penchant for mildly interesting drum patterns really all you need t be labeled as math rock? The answer it would seem, is yes. Following in a rich tradition of taking an unassuming pluralized noun for a band name, Chicago four-piece Maps and Atlases have been lumped in with such loosely-related ‘angular’ rock bands as Battles, Foals and Vessels while they prep the release of their debut album Perch Patchwork, out June 29th on Barsuk Records.
To whet your appetite we’ve been treated to a free download of album track ‘Solid Ground’, and while we might not agree entirely with the classification, there’s no denying this is a top track from a band with a lot to offer. It’s folky and bluesy, yet totally technical with some great musicianship on display.
Apparently the band got together way back in 2004, releasing two EPs on indie label Sargent House before signing with Barsuk. Things are definitely looking good for the album, and any stateside readers should check out one of their upcoming live dates, where they play alongside (among others) Tashed faves Frightened Rabbit. Check out the MySpace for more details.
