Rockets is the musical brainchild of Fred Oliveira, a designer and programmer by day. A member of Discotexas, a label and collective we have mentioned many times now, he’s known for producing tracks that range from filtered disco house to italo-disco and electronica.

we have been silently listening to his tracks over and over in the past few months, from “The Kid With The Goofy Skateboard” (coming out on Patrick Alavi’s roXour with an Alavi remix) to “Golden Strings” and of course “Running To You” which was released on Discotexas’ Forbidden Cuts.

Besides Discotexas getting it spot on, Rockets has a diverse and sweet taste for the most delicious tracks.

Wait no more, the spotlight is on them, especially with the latest remix done for Butterly Bones which is a real stunner.

Spacewalker Recordings is a spanking new disco label that deserves some real heat. Citing their influences as Eskimo, BearFunk, Nang Records and Add2Basket Records to name a few, they seem to be on the fast track to future success.

Hailing from Argentina, Toomy Disco is a newcomer on the dance production scene and the very first artiste to release anything on Spacewalker Recordings. His roots and taste is in classic disco and funk, thus he pursued his production dreams.

We have been keeping mum about DFA’s recent 12″ release from Black Van (Kris Menace + Kowesix) for a bit, even though they are on our ‘heavy rotation’ column on the right of this page. (Subtle, and sly)

It is for the single ‘Yearning‘, which includes a remix by Emperor Machine and it left a taste in our mouth we could not forget.

Holy Ghost! have been touring in recent months, from the far east to the pacific, but they recently decided to do what they would like to call, their very first and last mashup. Music sites like ours seldom or never ever post any mashups, but this is an exception just as it is to the band.

Black Van’s ‘Yearning‘ and Holy Ghost’s ‘I Will Come Back” happen to be in the same key and them being label mates, the mashup is a match made in disco heaven. Keeping the lower tempo of ‘Yearning‘ while adding the sweet vocals from the infamous track by Holy Ghost! seems like child’s play but no one else thought of it before and that makes it genius.

Before the mashup, Friendly Fires and Holy Ghost! had a record together in the tradition of old hardcore split 7″s so check out their take on “On Board”…suhweet.

That’s it… we can’t (or rather, really shouldn’t) keep quiet for much longer… CFCF is officially the business.

Released towards the end of last year on Toronto’s Paper Bag Records, Michael Silver’s debut as CFCF - ‘Continent’ ranks as one 2009’s most pleasant surprises: a serious, meticulously-crafted disco record that still sets those dance muscles twitching. (If you really wanna know how much this record meant to us, it was without doubt a top 5 in 09′ in our opinion.)

This is Silver’s great skill – an ability to make subtle, thought-provoking music that works in the club, in the bar, in the car, or on the kitchen stereo while you’re cooking up a mac and cheese. Cerebral yet danceable, all smooth, supple grooves, slow-motion basslines and haunting synths that drift in and out of the a track like a gentle breeze.

This might all sound a little contradictory, but in practice it really isn’t. It’s thoroughly modern, everyday music in the best possible way, trimming off the excess fat from juicy joints of kraut, italo and piano-house and slow-roasting them with a nice pop glaze. Ok so the cooking analogy’s a bit forced but you get the picture… this stuff is great no matter where you or what time of day it is, and it’s certainly been getting plenty of repeat listens over at Tashed HQ.

So what’s the man been up to recently?

Besides his weekly residency at Montreal’s ‘Dance Dance Dance’, he’s been getting stuck into some serious remix work, chalking up unlikely two-step crossover collaborations (Kingdom feat. Shyvonne’s ‘Mindreader’) and putting together a fantastic piano-driven dark house version of London pop dude Fabio Lendrum’s latest track ‘Trouble’.

Much more like this and he find himself the de-rigueur remixer for those in search of a more serious sound when the over-driven synth stabs and air-horns get a bit much. We’re not sure what comes next, but we’re certainly eager to find out.

We don’t wanna give away too many tracks, the five below are testament to their inimitable quality, but if you do get a chance to listen to ‘Monolith‘ which is on Continent, you will be teased and romanced with dreamy beats and piano for a track which is as close as it gets to perfection.

You may have already heard about Justin Faust’s newest EP “Holdin On“,  but we are not gonna let popularity cloud our desire to spread the word.

We were excited to receive the EP package from Justin himself a few weeks back,  and it was genuinely surprising since he lives life on the ‘faust lane’..

We honestly find these tracks impossible to dislike and they have been on repeat the past few weeks. Fellow label mate Moullinex adds a midas touch and we probably dig that and the original the most but don’t take our word for it. listen to them all and tear these tracks apart in the clubs, bars, living rooms you frequent.

On the tail of The Forbidden Cuts, which compiled three tracks from Moullinex, Xinobi and Rockets, comes Discotexas‘ second release, by dancefloor extraordinaire Justin Faust. This release not only packs two of his originals (Holdin’ On and Witty), but also three remixes (by Moullinex and Nightriders) that are sure to get your juices flowing.

Northern Ireland isn’t usually considered fertile ground for essential new producers, but after recently discovering Space Dimension Controller (more on him to follow) our latest and possibly greatest find suggests we really are going to have to start paying more attention to that part of the world.

Screendeath is Bangor’s Ryan Thompson, a supremely talented 18 year old who’s barely been producing for a year yet sounds like he’s been at it for a lifetime. We stumbled across his remix of L.A. house peddler Andy Caldwell’s ‘Scream’ with few expectations, yet within a minute we were picking our slack jaws up off the floor. Make no mistake, this shit is epic.

Plenty of people can do funky, grimy, dreamy, nasty, deep and/or pumping. Creating real drama and tension in a track is a skill few can master. This remix exhibits it in bucketloads, going for the jugular with an immediate loop of fuzzy, almost operatic keys before breaking down into the heavily vocoder territory for the intro proper. The beats don’t disappoint either, doing away with the frivolous bounce of the original in favour of a slick, subtle chug. Amazing stuff – check it out below in full 320kbps glory:

Fortunately for us, 2010 is going to be a busy year for Screendeath. His new track ‘Vitamin Friend‘ will be included on a compilation album to be released on Tommie Sunshine’s new label Brooklyn Fire’ sometime in the next month or two, while he’s also currently working on an EP with Savile (Southern Fried Records) which will feature a shiny new version of an old track ‘Mitora‘. That’s not to mention recently commissioned remix work for Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, Monarchy and We Have Band.

It’s the debut solo EP we’re really looking forward to though. Check out the unfinished preview of new track ‘Sparks’ to see exactly why:

Finally, we would like to round this post off with another shining example of sweeping, cinematic electronic music; a Tashed favourite from back in the day that has plenty in common with Screendeath’s Andy Caldwell remix. We first heard this on a mix album from the master Danny Tenaglia way back in 2002, and after eight years we’re still not sure it’s been bettered. The choral stuff at the start, the main vocal, the bassline, the piano… it’s perfectly-formed prog gold from start to finish. Enjoy.

The last we heard of Solid Gold was when they released their debut album Bodies Of Water in 2008, which we took a definite liking to, especially since they are on Green Label Sound (a single’s label), which featured other artists such as Chromeo, Holy Ghost! and Amazing Baby to name a few…

Minneapolis’ Solid Gold is the trio of Zach Coulter, Matthew Locher and Adam Hurlburt. Founding members Zach and Matthew met in 2000 in University and it wasn’t long after guitarist Adam was brought in that thay quickly started crafting their signature slow-dance grooves.

Their live show became complete with the addition guitarist Shon Troth and drummer “Sticks” and the band have played showcases in London and New York, performing at festivals everywhere from Texas to the middle of Sweden.

Tanlines adds a bongo beat and a video game’s final level joy to the hazy original of Solid Gold’s latest track “Matter Of Time“. It is Solid Gold’s first release since their 2008 debut album, Bodies of Water and they have unveiled their latest music video for the spacey synth-laden track.

Featuring a remix from Morgan Kibby of M83 (AKA White Sea) Solid Gold released their new EP, Synchronize, on the 12th of Jan. The release is comprised of a couple new Solid Gold songs and a cover of Kenny Loggin’s Top Gun epic jam, “Danger Zone”, which should entice anyone.

French label On The Fruit have been carving out a nice little crystalline niche for themselves in the big sparkling glacier of space-electro (or whatever it is we’re calling it this week), trading in an anthemic, synth heavy sound that lends itself to comparisons with fellow Frenchies Valerie Collective.

Where these guys really stand out though is the rawness of their sound.

Tracks like Freak You’s ‘From Nowhere’ have a brashness and fervor that really sets them apart, layering edgy, ethereal melodies over dark monotonal basslines straight from a Dario Argento slasher flick. ‘Torn Over’ sounds like a partially-reformed metal-head reimagining the collected works of The Human League for a hypothetical 18-rated arcade game. The real deal for us though is ‘Ballad For A Diskjockey’ which takes you on a dreamy space journey you will never forget.

In just a few days On The Fruit are launching another quality act – Midnight Club. With over twenty years in the production biz under various guises these guys are no spring chickens, and their experience shows with deft touch and a maximalist approach that fits the label to a tee. It’s the kind of stuff that will make mincemeat of the right dancefloor, and each of the five tracks on the The Machine EP are more than deserving of your attention.

No duds here, but we particularly like the big electronic bangs and crashes found in the original and B-side ‘Replay’. Look out for the release later this month.

This also gives us an excuse to give props to another ‘On The Fruit’ stalwart in Worship. A bit more restrained but no less assured, ‘The Dome’ was one of our top EPs of ‘09… a real dark horse that demonstrates an obvious skill for sound sculpture and the dark arts of prog-disco. EP number two is apparently in the pipeline, so watch this space for more details…

Few can say they fit their moniker as well as Ashley Jones does with Treasure Fingers and boy does he have the midas touch.

For the past three years, the DJ and producer has been making it rain in the disco with innovative remixes and original tracks.

Jones is hardly a fresh face on the scene, with over a decade of international club experience and studio work as part of the legendary drum & bass group, Evol Intent.

Yet as Treasure Fingers, he’s found a way to merge his diverse influences and deep history into a signature sound, packed with intricate basslines, chopped-up, gritty synth melodies, and party-ready drum breaks. It captured the ears of everyone from rock groups Snowden and Miike Snow to house legends Romanthony and Roy Davis JR (all of whom personally requested the Treasure Fingers remix treatment).

Equally intrigued were A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs, who quickly signed Treasure Fingers to their tastemaking label Fool’s Gold.

“Cross The Dancefloor” was Treasure Fingers’ debut, an inescapably catchy, vocoder-laced dance gem that two-steps over genre boundaries. The instant classic received support from A-List DJs around the world such as Pete Tong and Annie Mac.

Treasure Fingers has kept the momentum going with heavy touring and official remixes for numerous artists including Little Boots (I Am Sound), Chromeo (Vice/Atlantic), Empire of the Sun (EMI), Kid Sister (Downtown), N.A.S.A (Epitaph) and James Curd (Om)

A new batch of equally funky Treasure Fingers originals & a mix CD are on their way along with tours in North America, Europe, UK, Asia, Australia and South America. These coming after successful tours and gigs with artists Roy Davis Jr, Chromeo, Laidback Luke, Fred Falke and Felix da Housecat  to name a few.

Being a website based in the Asia-Pacific region, we thank the likes of HOME Club in Singapore among other nightspots for pushing the envelope with quality acts and as part of the re-invention (not like they needed any), their infamous LO-FI night goes crazy and brings you a debut performance from all the way across the Pacific.

This time Treasure Fingers are joined at the decks by residents Ming (HOME resident), Kurt (Clash The Disko Kids) and TASHED.COM (thats us!!!), the roof is set to be blown off!
