HOUSES + MEMORYHOUSE

Music | Johnny | December 6, 2010

Many have attempted to be part of the recent chillwave/dreampop resurgence, but few get remembered (by us at least). We cannot claim to be absolute fans of the genre, as it is either a hit or miss for us at times.

But being polarized does not render us unappreciative of the music, and the likes of Millionyoung, Memoryhouse, Washed Out, Toro Y Moi, Memory Tapes and Com Truise really stick to our minds.

We can now add Houses to this exclusive list that we are trying to compile in our tiny minds.

It is one of the most understated and intimate albums released this year with a lovely and simple story behind it – Read what Dexter from Houses has to say about the album:

I got laid off from my job at the end of last year and decided I needed a change. My girlfriend put in her two weeks and we moved out to a little cabin in Papaikou, Hawaii. It’s a pretty remote place outside of Hilo (i.e no plumbing/electricity/gas).

We worked for meals during the day cultivating microorganisms and learning the basics of sustainable living. We drank showered and cooked with rain water. In our downtime, she would paint and I would re- cord. We’d have to light candles in an effort to save solar power to keep my computer running. We inspired each other a lot out there, and I think it shows on the album. The music comes from a place of love and ease.”

Being away from the sprawl of the city often gives one clarity and this album clearly shows what it means to make music as pure as this. It was released in October this year, but we can be certain we will soak it all up for a long time to come.

MP3 HOUSES – SOAK IT UP

Memoryhouse recently released Heirloom/Caregiver and we really should leave the images and music with you for full effect. Few words can describe music which can create such an impact for simple, soothing sounds.
