Chilly Alejandro Gonzales, formerly known as Jason Beck changed his identity years ago and the tide seems to be taking him places he has never been before. And this is a man who has been places…

The question “Who is Chilly Gonzales?” elicits various answers: Berlin underground prankster rapper, workaholic Grammy-nominated producer, melancholic piano virtuoso or Guinness World Record holder. And now: IVORY TOWER writer, composer, actor and producer.

Gonzales left Canada for Berlin in 1998. Daft Punk, Bjork remixes did him well, but it wasn’t enough. So on to Paris, and collaborations with Feist on her Let It Die and The Reminder albums.

Solo Piano then became Gonzales’ own best selling album, introducing Gonzo to an audience who actually buy music sometimes. The piano pieces were used in documentaries, in films.

While he seems to be fighting the chill in the image above, what he does best is send chills down our spine when we hear his music these days. Watch the video for “I Am Europe” below.

With his insatiable ambition and obsession for the piano, he does more than rub it off on us. Rough Trade Shop boldly proclaimed that his single ‘Never Stop’ is “Possibly the best piano driven slice of disco that’s been made in the last 10 years”. There is definitely little reason to refute this.
