AMARI “POWERI”

Music | jon.ramsay | May 13, 2010

Seven albums and counting yet we’ve never heard of Amari… how can this be!?

The pasty, sunlight-starved inhabitants of Tashed HQ have their ears pressed to the ground pressed to the ground 24-7 (as much out of fear as a desire to bring you timely and compelling content), yet it’s reassuring we can be still be surprised by a previously-unknown troupe of electropop miscreants hailing from the spiritual Italo homeland of Udine.

As their bumper back catalogue would suggest, the Italian five-piece have been at the music game for a while (since 1996 in fact), yet the freshness of their new album ‘Poweri’ suggests a band that still gets their kicks and wants you to get yours too. Opening track and previous single ‘Your Kisses’ bounces with the same ‘deceptively simple’ pop formula that Hot Chip nailed back in 2006, while still keeping you guessing with the typically Italian (we think) cheeky finesse of Tashed favourites Fare Soldi and Clap Rules. We were intrigued from the start, but the Delorean-esque final section of tropical percussion and squealing synth solo really sealed the deal.

The album is out now on iTunes and Beatport, with an official UK release on Riotmaker scheduled for 5th July. Having recently remixed Thieves Like Us and The Tough Alliance, we’re told the guys are touring with the likes of Santigold and The Whip, so expect to hear much more about them very soon. For the time being just be thankful that there are many worthy bands out there slogging away to bring you great, fresh sounding music – even after seven full albums of blood, sweat and plenty beers. Salute to Amari!

Here’s the amusingly referential video for forthcoming single ‘Tiger’, with mp3 goodies to follow:
