KITSUNE MAISON 9: THE PETIT BATEAU EDITON (COTTON ISSUE)

Music | Johnny | March 16, 2010

It seems that this new album was thought out, conceived and put together whilst a new baby (born in the Kitsuné family recently) was being breastfed in the room next door. He’s called Yumé – ‘dream’ in Japanese.

So logically the toddler has had some kind of influence on the new Kitsuné Maison compilation.

We kinda lost touch on the last few compilations Kitsune put out, with many of the tracks being circulated and becoming hits prior to its release. Its inevitable since they all come from different labels and they are produced at different times, and while a few from no. 9 have been on the interwebs of late, it is another stellar release from the folks at Kitsune.

They pride themselves as tastemakers, and while we hope this series never ends, we know one day it has to. So while we find comfort in this temporary beam of light which is arguably their most snuggly, peaceful, motherly Kitsuné compilation until now – soft as cotton as they would like it to be called.

In the midst of one of the worst winters Paris has known for a long time and with so many conflicts all around, they have been looking for calm and tenderness. A fully padded compilation that’s rather more candid, innocent and carefree than the norm, and suddenly a new transversal approach shapes up with this compilation attractive to ears of all ages.

Rested, serene, more contemplative, with a selection that’s probably more geared at sunday afternoon than saturday night, more yuzu green tea than stupid alcopops. Sure there are a few hysterical sirens in the Jupiter track, but they asked for them to be toned down in order to keep the little one asleep.

Kitsune and Tashed have the same opinion on Silver Columns and they are currently the most luscious act around, certified and guaranteed. They also have one hell of a singer in the band, who sounds eerily like Jimmy Somerville.

Washed Out, the glo-fi act that caught the whole blogosphere by storm last year is also featured in this compilation and boy do we love them. So that is it, the few that have been floating around.

Don’t rush it, anticipate and appreciate.
