We know the suspense is unbearable but we implore you to take your time unzipping and revealing the meat of these 2 interviews.
We present Edwin Van Cleef & G.L.O.V.E.S. to you …
These fresh-faced talents are two of the nu-disco scene’s most in-demand producers and remixers.
24 year old Englishman Edwin Van Cleef was responsible for one of 2009’s biggest tunes with ‘Overtaken’ which received plenty of support from Radio 1 DJs Jaymo, Andy George and Kissy Sellout, while G.L.O.V.E.S. has burst forth to release stunning solo productions on Bang Gang 12” and remix for the likes of Cut Copy, Jet, Van She and Miami Horror.
Both have wowed crowds on a global scale, with Edwin Van Cleef laying waste to legendary European nightspots such as Razzmatazz (Barcelona) and Neon Disco (Milan), while G.L.O.V.E.S. held acclaimed residencies at 3rd Class (Melbourne) and One Love – Down Low Disco (Sydney).
If you are in the Asia-Pacific region these few weeks, there will will nothing but treats for all of you with both Edwin Van Cleef & G.L.O.V.E.S. touring, along with Treasure Fingers and Holy Ghost! being on duty in various cities all over.
EDWIN VAN CLEEF X G.L.O.V.E.S. EVENT @ HOUSE (DEMPSEY)

G.L.O.V.E.S. has been a friend of ours for a while now, providing the world with quality releases time and again, even when he was part of now defunct Damn Arms with Tim Sullivan (aka Das Moth).

TASHED.COM: Hey GLOVES! How’s 2010 shaping up so far? Sticking to those New Year’s resolutions or are they out of the window already?
Dude, they’re so long gone I can’t even remember what they were haha. 2010 has been rad, to be honest I’ve been on vacation since early January in India & Thailand, so yeah – it’s been an ace year so far. Looking forward to getting home & finishing some originals for a forthcoming release – I’ve been going remix crazy the last few months, so high time for an original release!
TASHED.COM: 2009 was really the year things blew up big time for GLOVES. How are you going to top it? Any big production, remixing or touring plans you want to share with us?
Yeah, 2009 was tops. I’m putting more originals out this year, touring further from home than ever before & even moving into scoring for a documentary series. I’ll try to find time for a remix or two also, I am actually in my final year at university this year too so it’s going to be great to finish that up.
TASHED.COM: Where you based at now? How’s the scene at your current location?
Right now I’m in Railay, Thailand but I reside most of the time in Melbourne, Australia. The scene is pretty weird. I’m lucky to have a great tight circle of talented & creative friends there so in that way the scene is good. We have great producers coming out of our city too. The club scene is fairly good, but is very up & down!!
TASHED.COM: Your remixing has been nothing short of prolific lately. Where do you get all that time and creative energy?
Time is definitely a problem! I just work hard & put in long hours whenever I can. Sleeping definitely loses out on that side of things!
Creative energy comes & goes, if things aren’t working I’ll go out for lunch, play tennis or go swimming & come back to it later or the next day. Then when things do work, I will go for it & put in a long haul, I usually do a remix in 2-4 good sessions.
TASHED.COM: You held residencies at clubs in both Sydney and Melbourne last year? How do the crowds differ in the two Aussie clubbing capitals and how they compared to the crowds you’ve played for overseas?
Sydney & Melbourne are constantly changing but the consistent difference seems to be that Sydney likes a slightly more fun & obvious sound overall. As a generalization Melbourne likes things a bit darker & more complex. I like playing them both, but Sydney is less critical & you can get away with a lot more irony & cheese which can be fun times.
Overseas things are always different, even between Sydney & Melbourne there are tracks that will be an overplayed anthem in one city while the same track is virtually unknown & clears the floor in Melbourne, so every city has it’s nuances. This is even the case between two clubs in the same city sometimes! So overseas I always just pack a good variety & try to read the room..
TASHED.COM: What you listening to right now?
Right now it’s just computers whirring, some bird calls & waves in the distance – I’m in an internet cafe on the beachfront in Railay, Thailand.
Of late though, other than keeping up with all my friends / associates current productions, I’ve been listening to lot’s of old school house, some french touch & usually a lot of R&B / yacht rock. Some favorites of late have been Romanthony, Bill Withers, Christopher Cross, My Bloody Valentine, Michael McDonald, Sebastian Tellier, & all of the french touch Crydamoure & Roule’ style artists.
TASHED.COM: Any unlikely musical favourites you’d like to share with us? The more embarrassing/obscure the better…
Ah…Burt Bacharach!!
TASHED.COM: What are the best and worst things about being a DJ? Gotta give the kids the whole picture
Best: Playing your tracks to full rooms of fans who are loving it & then partying with the locals after your set.
Worst: Easy – being hungover on the plane the next morning, it really is the worst.
TASHED.COM: Hypothetical disaster scenario: a raging inferno is about to engulf your bedroom, you have time to grab THREE prized personal possessions before legging it. What would they be?
Studio Electronics ATC-1, macbook pro & my external drives!
TASHED.COM: We know you’ve been to Singapore a few times before… apart from the adoring fans, what is it that keeps you coming back?
Singapore is a cool city & it seems to always be on the way to anywhere else from Australia! I never plan to come to Singapore but lately it just keeps coming up as a welcome stopover. I also have lot’s of friends there to visit, the clubs are good, the food is amazing & I just always seem to have a great time!

—–EDWIN VAN CLEEF INTERVIEW —–
Edwin Van Cleef has been on our radar for ages as well, working with the most exciting indivuals and every release is mint as hell. From Bat For Lashes, DatA, Fear Of Tigers, Heartsrevolution to Grum, they seem to make few mistakes in the choices they make.
TASHED.COM: Hey Edwin! How’s 2010 shaping up so far? Sticking to those New Year’s resolutions or are they out of the window already?
Yo, I’m not really a big believer in New Year’s resolutions as no one ever seems to stick to them, it’s as if you’re just setting yourself up for a fall.
This years been great so far though I’ve must putting the finishing touches to my next EP which, even if blowing my own trumpet a little bit, is by far and away the best track I’ve done. Can’t wait for people to hear it.
TASHED.COM: 2009 was really the year things blew up big time for you. How are you going to top it? Any big production, remixing or touring plans you want to share with us?
As I said previously my next release will be coming out sometime in the next few months. It’s a brand new never before heard track called “Heart Beat Faster”, backed with remixes from Le Matos and Monsieur Adi and another brand new track called “Falling”.
I’m hoping it’ll be out around March-April. I’m also just finishing a remix for Housse De Racket and my remix for Raw Man + Blanche – United should be coming out soon hopefully. Good times!
TASHED.COM: Where you based at now? How’s the scene at your current location?
I’m based in Leeds in the UK which is great for going out and drinking but I wouldn’t really know about anything else haha, 97.2% of my gigs are abroad.
TASHED.COM: There’s quite a vibrant scene in the UK now what with the likes of Russ Chimes, Grum, Starsmith etc. Are you guys conscious of pushing a similar musical agenda or are you just trying to do your own thing?
I think everyone’s trying to push their own sound even if it does fall into a similar genre. Grum’s actually a housemate of mine so you’d think we’d do things a bit more similar to each other but it doesn’t seem to work out that way.
He’s too busy playing DJ Hero on the 360 these days anyway instead of actually making new music.
TASHED.COM: We’ve got some ‘interesting’ memories of Razzamatazz in Barcelona to say the least. How was it playing a club like that? Was it during Sonar?
It was really cool actually, wasn’t on during Sonar but it was still rammed.
I just remember having a fridge full of drinks to myself and missing going to the beach due to sleeping the entire day before my gig after not getting any sleep before the flight. Waste of a day in Spain, nice beds though…
TASHED.COM: What you listening to right now?
I’m listening to a Laura Branigan album actually! Specifically though I’m listening to Laura Branigan – Spirit of Love, it’s the cheesiest song ever but has this really agressive guitar solo in the middle that comes out of nowhere. Ridiculous!
The whole album is amazing actually.
TASHED.COM: Any unlikely musical favourites you’d like to share with us? The more obscure the better…
I think all my musical favourites are a bit unlikely really. The amount of obscure 80s albums I have is either embarassing or amazing depending on who you talk to.
Mazarati, El Debarge, Monte Kristo, Jimi Tunnel, etc etc. Actually are these unlikely favourites? I think I misinterpreted the question there…
TASHED.COM: What are the best and worst things about being a DJ? Gotta give the kids the whole picture…
Best thing: The ability to travel around the world to play my own tracks… That’s a bit boring actually isn’t it, I’ve changed my mind, the best thing is all the hot chickssss… ahaha
Worst thing: Waiting about in airports. Especially after having zero hours sleep.
TASHED.COM: Hypothetical disaster scenario: a raging inferno is about to engulf your bedroom, you have time to grab THREE prized personal possessions before legging it. What would they be?
Oh god oh god! Uh… My PC as I don’t back anything up at all so I’d be buggered if I didn’t save it, my speakers because they’re like my babies, and uh… wow my bedroom really doesn’t feature many things I’d need to save…
TASHED.COM: Is this your first time in Singapore? What have you heard about the place (apart from the chewing gum ban myth)?
It’s a myth?! Holy shit. I live on chewing gum so I thought I was going to have to go cold turkey or something.
All I’ve heard is that I’ll probably end up getting caned or the death penalty for absolutely anything, I hope that’s not the case anyway, I’m kinda fond of my skin and life. Oh I also know that Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819. Thanks google!
