ALBUM REVIEW: TAKEN BY TREES – EAST OF EDEN

Music | Johnny | October 8, 2009

Victoria Bergsman took a different path this time round with her new album East Of Eden, under the name Taken By Trees, without forgetting the essence of her recordings.

How can one forget The Concretes and the sunbeams it shone on us, or her vocals on the track the whole world is familiar with now, “Young Folks”?

Her last albumĀ Open Field, recorded under the name Taken By Trees went under the radar for most but it was such a beauty, evoking such emotion and visuals of serene places all at once.

She decided to head to Pakistan to record her latest album East Of Eden ,probably to gain some Qawwali inspiration as the likes of Jeff Buckley and Devendra Banhart have over the years. There is in fact a track with a Qawwali singer instead of her in it.

You can take the skepticsm and throw it out of the window though, as she knows not to take the influence too far, while maintaining her scandinavian roots at the same time.

These scandinavians know how to do things subtly and so does she, gently purring with each track. It can be haunting at times, but also incredibly introspective.

“My Boys” is a re-interpretation of an Animal Collective track off their album Merriweather Post Pavillion and sometimes it really doesn’t get any better than this.

Her worldly influences are telling, so this album is a spirited effort. Just be careful not to get too hypnotized.
