EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH KNIGHTLIFE!

We absolutely love the Aussie music that has been coming out lately and we recognize the collective-ness & quality of the scene there. It has allowed them to stamp their authority in this recent wave of disco/tropical pop/indie/electronic scene (or whatever you wanna call it).

Then we have Knightlife, who recently ended a tour with Cut Copy in North America and have been on our radar for a while now. Knightlife prefers to remain coy and anonymous to twist and distort your mind with kaleidoscope dreams (as you can see with the costume and all)  but really, he’s just one of the most exciting acts to come out recently.

We recently sat down in the virtual world and had a sun soaked chat with Knightlife, which started in typical friendly Aussie fashion but ended with Paris Hilton being told to screw off! what!?

We love it!

1. Ello mate! Why the name Knightlife and how did it all start for you?

Ello! The Knightlife name came about by accident really. It had come time to pick a name for myself and I sort of stumbled upon it. That was it. It’s a name that means a lot of things, but you’ll have to get to know me better before I reveal all!

It all started at university. We were working on a TV spot that centered around this massive club scene. Being poor students, we naturally had no money for music – and I had been screwing around with synths for a little while, so I volunteered to write something. The end product eventually turned into Ambobop and a friend of mine, who knew the Cutters guys, gave the tune to them. They called me up and here we are!

2. How was the North American Tour with Cut Copy!

Amazing! It was my first time touring the US of A so it was pretty intense. All a bit of a blur really. Living on a bus for a month was the most interesting – a very strange way to live! The guys have a bit of a following over there so the crowds were intense. I’ve never had that many people staring at me! Band supports are always interesting. Some crowds want to party, some don’t, some want you to hurry up and get off so the main act can come on. It was all great fun. The guys did such a good job over there.

3. Do you do production yourself?

Yep. It’s all Knightlife baby!

4. Everytime we hear your sun soaked reprise of Cut Copy’s “So Haunted” we wanna party till 10 in the morning, anymore new stuff coming up for Knightlife?

Ha! It’s working then! We’re all working feverishly towards the Cutters Records re-launch which will see the release of my new 12″. Expect things to start happening in the coming weeks. Sorry it’s all taken so long! Not long to go now.

5. What are the most important factors for Knightlife in the process of remixing a particular track?

I always like to take the track in an unexpected direction – give it something the original doesn’t have. Like take a vocal and write new chords underneath it, or change the whole vibe of a song. It’s amazing how different things can sound sometimes, but that’s the most interesting part of remixing. Well, in my opinion anyway.

6. Any festivals coming up for you guys?

Maybe a few in Europe over the summer. Nothing locked in yet though. Stay tuned.

7. Most unforgettable set ever!?

Probably my first set ever. I’d just been signed to Cutters Records and the guys asked me to support them on the Melbourne leg of their Hearts On Fire tour. I was terrified, but it was great. The crowd were very forgiving – I think every mix was a train-wreck!

8. What can we expect from Knightlife in 09?

Productivity. A few less remixes, a few more original productions.

9. If you weren’t a DJ what would you be?

Who told you I was a DJ?

10. Fred Falke has come out to say he wants to make music with you, are you gonna collaborate with him soon or with anyone else for that matter?

Fred is a good dude – a bit of a hero of mine. Don’t tell him that though. We will definitely do something together, at some stage. We just have to get the planets to align first! We have a bit of a collective in Melbourne, so it’s hard not to collaborate sometimes. The quality-control team here is pretty solid – and brutal.

Say no and tell her to screw off.
