Album Review: Asobi Seksu – Hush

Music | Johnny | March 2, 2009

Asobi Seksu is “casual sex” in colloquial Japanese terms.

The music from the band Asobi Seksu however, is by no means casual.

Asobi Seksu might just be the band to take over the mantle of “Best shoegaze album of the year” after M83’s “Saturdays=Youth” totally ruled shoegaze in 08′.

We loved their previous album ‘Citrus’ rotten, with its sweet shoegaze melodies, and ‘Hush’ their latest album was released a couple a weeks ago to amazing reviews.

We heard it and we fell in love once again and we left it stuck on repeat.

This time round, lead singer Yuki Chikudate, who has Japanese roots and sings in both English & Japanese, aims to show us a side to Asobi Seksu we have not heard before on record.

They sounded really pretty with all the melodies highlighted while on record with ‘Citrus‘, but as fans who have seen them live know all too well, they really know how to blow the crowd away with their loud and heavy sounds.

This fact is proven to everyone with the new album ‘Hush’ which shows more progression than change, revealing their version of expansive, gorgeous pop sounds.

We feel right at home to the sounds of Asobi Seksu and totally dig their latest offering.

Enjoy their single “Familiar Light” which is AMAZING.
